I first heard of Jocko Willink after listening to the Joe Rogan Experience when he was talking about his new book Extreme Ownership. I’m not an armed services junky, and I don’t know how to really explain my fascination with Jocko (an ex-Marine). All I can say is that I want to embrace the very ethos he lives by. He’s a business owner, podcaster, author (with MANY books), blackbelt in Jiu Jitsu (training regularly), works out every morning (no matter where he’s at) – the list could go on! Here’s a clip of the bio from his site:

Jocko spent 20 years in the U.S. Navy SEAL Teams, starting as an enlisted SEAL and rising through the ranks to become a SEAL officer. As commander of SEAL Team Three’s Task Unit Bruiser during the battle of Ramadi, he orchestrated SEAL operations that helped the “Ready First” Brigade of the US Army’s First Armored Division bring stability to the violent, war-torn city. Task Unit Bruiser became the most highly decorated Special Operations Unit of the Iraq War. Jocko returned from Iraq to serve as Officer-in-Charge of training for all West Coast SEAL Teams. There, he spearheaded the development of leadership training and personally instructed and mentored the next generation of SEAL leaders who have continued to perform with great success on the battlefield.

Some might think it extreme but the guy is a bad-a** mother f*****. If you follow him on his Instagram page, you will see he’s HIGHLY disciplined and makes things happen by sheer determination and will. He embraces his current situation stoicly and makes it happen, no matter what >it< is.

What You Can Learn

First, and foremost, Jocko’s a great storyteller. His tone, cadence, excitement, emphasis and pause (my goodness, the pauses!) are spot. You will get sucked in. The majority of Jocko’s topics are based in the armed services and discuss the stories, lessons, trials and tribulations that you experience while being the armed services; however, Jocko’s also a husband, father and business owner, so a lot of his topics intertwine with real life scenarios. And that’s the beauty of his podcast – you can apply anything that Jocko discusses to any aspect of your life, no matter the topic he’s discussing.

Still not sure – watch this….
